Who is behind Start Me Up?

Start Me Up was founded and is run by Clare Harrison, a future of work enthusiast and former business editor with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University. The program has been developed in conjunction with an experienced educational board comprising PhD students and experts from industry from over five countries.

Why Bali?

Bali is home to a unique startup ecosystem. It has been studied by academics from Harvard and Edinburgh University. You can read about the growing number of entrepreneurs here.

What happens at weekends?

At weekends we run excursions which you are welcome to join. These could include visiting little-known beaches or taking part in a surf camp. 

What do the fees cover?

The fees cover 24/7 support, accommodation, airport pickup, access to a co-working space, training and workshops provided by tech professionals. We also pay full-time coordinators on the ground to find opportunities and provide ongoing support in the countries where we operate.

What should I wear?

Generally, we operate in hot countries, so T-shirts and shorts or lightweight clothing are best. Startup founders in tropical countries tend to be very casually dressed. As a general rule, it’s best not to dress in a way that may offend people in the country you’re visiting.

What will the weather be like?

The weather in Bali is tropical and the average daily temperature is around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). There is no monsoon season in Bali but there are two main seasons, dry and wet. The wet season still offers plenty of sunshine but sees afternoon showers. [October to February (Wet). March to September (Dry)]

What does a typical day look like?

Not all days are the same, but you’ll typically spend your time in various workshops,  working on your own startup project and working with our mentors.

What skills will I develop during the program?

Our Startup Bootcamp Program covers our core workshop series which focuses on developing creative and entrepreneurial skills . These include ideation, validating ideas, building minimal viable products, pitching, design thinking and more

How long are the programs?

Our Startup Bootcamp Program is 16 days long, starting  on Friday and ending on Sunday.

Do I have to have a startup idea?

No you don’t have to have a startup idea. We run ideation workshops to help you develop and select an idea.

Can I connect with others before the placement starts?

Yes we will make a cohort Whatsapp group so you can talk to others who will be arriving at the same time as you.

How many other people will be on my cohort?

Our cohorts are usually around 8-15.

Where do the workshops happen?

We run our workshops at top-rated co-working spaces. These are shared workspaces used by entrepreneurs and freelancers. 

Will anyone meet me at the airport?

Yes. Every new arrival is met at the airport and transported to the housing site.
